Where doRussian Sausages come from?
They are South African market and butchery staples, but why do we call them Russians?
Many have asked, and little know about where the name for the Russian sausage comes from. Well, put down your swords as we have news for you! Our fellow dearest South Africans, this favourite delight is actually named after the Russian Kolbasa, which is a food that many Russians grow up with eating.
It was 1917 and the revolution was over. The Russians were sitting with a food shortage (especially meat). A man by the name of Anastas Mikoyan travelled to America to find inspiration and discovered the Bologna sausage. With making his findings he went back to Russia and made his own adaptation of sausage. Tada! The Kolbasa. South Africans made their own spin on it too and voila! We present to you the Russian sausage that we’ve all have been enjoying for generations.
So, put an end to the fights over where the Russian actually comes from. From America, to Russia, to South Africa and to your plate.
